This volume introduces the open hand technique — one of the three left hand techniques known as the Triangulation of Fingering Systems — and explores all the possibilities of the open hand technique in as many positions as a player feels comfortable. Once the player has finished Part 1, he or she may begin studying Technical Foundation Studies, Volume 2, “The Thumb Positions”. The two volumes are designed to run parallel. The appendix of volume one consists of other published articles on performance and technique written by the author.
